I thought it hadn't happened yet?
due to start July
Two day trail ride on in that area this weekend.
Yes Hamish, I believe they are doiing right down the Te Iringa to Kaipo...
This off another forum from a Phillip Dawson of OSPRI.
So it looks like the pines have/are being done however we still have some time before the 'Kaipo' drop.Quote:
Clements Mill Road has not been treated with anything yet.
Clements Mill is part of the ‘Kaipo’ operation which we have planned to start pre-feeding in late July – but more likely August, given the weather.
The area that did get treated, and comes close to Clements Mill, is private land mostly owned by Lake Taupo Forest Trust. It is the remainder of the half completed ‘East Taupo’ operation. The already-treated half of this operation is owned by CNIC – managed by Kaingaroa Timberlands. It was treated with toxin on 3rd March 2016.
The boundaries of the area treated on Saturday: Waitahanui stream is the northern boundary, Hinemaiaia stream is the southern boundary, eastern boundary is near Clements mill road and the lake is its western boundary. Saturday 4th June was non-toxic pre-feed deer repellent coated bait (which can look a reddish colour sometimes). Pre-feed baits can be closer to the edges of the operational boundary than toxin so I assume this person was looking over the fence at this bait(?).
A bit of background on splitting this operation: the Timberlands section of the East Taupo operation was initially planned for completion in late 2015 and to follow was going to be Saturdays treatment area, planned for about March. Timberlands could not be done in late 2015 so it was moved to the March treatment date. Saturdays treatment, initially planned for March, was then moved to now. These moves were made to allow a bit more time for trust owners to hunt untreated lands prior to winter.
"Kaipo" in TBFree and DoC speak means pretty well the whole RHA

Geeze, that is just criminal. Such a lovely area in there.
Aerial drops in a RHA that is so accessible is absolute madness. RIP to a lot of wildlife in there. I was in the area in April and the bush was alive with birdsong so will be interesting to compare this after the proposed genocide there.
Has anything gone ahead in there?
When? I was in there 2 weeks ago and no signs up?
Crap :( guess i might aswell get my camera out of there then
This rain will do it good.
Anyone hanging around Taupo after the sika show for a hunt ? I had planned to head into the Kaipo but plan b I guess....
Good point , might have to set it somewhere else and get an idea of numbers because i cant eat anything from a drop zone for 3ish months? Is that right?
It's ok it won't kill you :O_O:
Went for a walk in there on Saturday. Plenty of little green baits all over the show. Although nearly all of them were turning to mush due to the rain. Did see a couple of dead rats in the bush though.
Looked at dozens of baits. No sign of repellant.
with these drops generally, if you hunt that area soon after, how toxic is the water in the streams?
Is it safe to take animals from the area or too soon? Will go check my camera tomorrow. Cheers
If the signs are still up it's "deemed' to be unsafe to take animals, the signs were still up at Pureora south of HW30 but there's heaps of hunters in there, dogs and all.
Nothing to do with Clements rd, but I had to nip down to Hastings last week, absolutely amazed at the effect the big snow dump over the Rangataiki/Napier Taupo hill has had on the countryside---the scrub,(and there's plenty of it), is as flat as a pancake, even the gorse/Broom, is flat!! It's incredible! And at various places along the road--Te Haroto/Tarawera, there's heaps of pig rooting right to the edge of the road. The piggies are as safe as a church in that crap, it was hard enough to get through before but it's fargin impossible now!! A lot of damage to the tops of the bush at various places too.:)
Snow crushed scrub here is going to save a lot of deer this coming roar
You will hear the sika but won't be able to get to them
Clements is a real mess after the snow, I spent a fortnight out there feeding out with one of our big tractors after the snow and shot up the road for a look. Trees down everywhere.

Thats going to make things difficult for a while!

Yeah hope so Nick-D. That and the heavy rain recently will hopefully have a positive effect on this part of paradise. I'll be down there in a couple of weeks, will have to leave the dog behind unfortunately but got to have a look for myself.

The summary states deer repellant is used and a 5month stand down on taking animals.
Plenty of these suckers around, deer shit literally beside them in some cases. No dead animals spotted and trail cam had plenty of action since the drop so hopefully it doesnt effect them too much.
